Hair biology
InvestigationalCan blocking prolactin receptors help regrow hair?
What it is
ABS-201 is an experimental monoclonal antibody designed to block the prolactin receptor (PRLR). Absci is testing it for pattern hair loss.
What we know
Laboratory studies support investigating this pathway. Controlled human hair-regrowth benefit is not yet established in the reviewed evidence; interim safety reports do not establish efficacy.
What nutrition can contribute
No dietary equivalent to selective PRLR antibody blockade has been demonstrated in the evidence reviewed here. This mechanism does not justify a prolactin-lowering food protocol.
What remains uncertain
Prolactin has not been established as the single root cause of pattern hair loss. Long-term benefit and safety, including reproductive effects, remain uncertain.

Mechanism evidence
Human follicle culture shows that prolactin can affect hair cycling. These laboratory conditions do not establish a patient treatment effect, and blood prolactin is not a validated substitute for local receptor activity.
What challenges the headline?
A small retrospective series in women did not support moderate blood prolactin elevation as a simple explanation for hair loss. It did not test PRLR blockade. Finasteride trials support androgen-pathway involvement; an additional pathway would not invalidate those findings.
Funding, interests and appraisal gaps
Both clinical programs have industry sponsors. The ABS-201 updates and models come from its developer; Hope Medicine has its own commercial interest. Full analysis plans, independent replication and long-term safety remain incompletely verified. Sponsor reporting and missing information are visible, without a hidden score.
